Today is a very special day! The whole world celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day celebrates the innumerable achievements of women in fields related to science. Historically, women have struggled against enormous challenges, such as inequality, injustice, prejudice, and lack of opportunity. Science in particular has always been an area where these barriers have prevented women and girls from advancing in or even contributing to the field.
Marie Curie, Mary Anning, Florence Nightingale, Jane Goodall, Hypatia, Rosalind Franklin— these are just a few of the widely known women who struggled and fought against these barriers, but countless women and girls continue to fight for equal footing, opportunity, and recognition. Around the world, things are changing for the better, but these challenges are still very prevalent, and we must continue to raise awareness of them. When women are empowered, the whole world wins!
